If you want to feel like cattle moving through the line to the butcher, this is the midwifery for you. You're literally given a number when you walk through the door, and your name is no longer important. I'm sure there are practical reasons for the front office to use numbers, but I feel that posting your number on the door and on your chart in big bold font right on the front is so... belittling. The number system should be more discreet, it dehumanizes the patients. As an anxious expecting mother, I did not feel safe and/or reassured at most of my visits. In fact, one midwife in particular told me my baby was breech at 37 weeks and that a c-section was inevitable... Not that she "suspected" breech, or that she wanted to follow up with an ultrasound and verify.. no, she was down right gloating about my baby being the second breech she caught that day. I mean she gave me paperwork on what to expect during surgery, talked me through the process, even had me place my hand on my stomach and told me "see there, that's the head. I'm sorry." After losing sleep and fighting panic attacks about being cut open and all the numerous things that can go wrong with a c-section, we got an ultrasound the next morning and found that she was deeply mistaken. Her suspicion should have been approached as such, a "suspicion," not told to me as a direct and full diagnosis. To go as far as having me put my hand on what I now know was my son's butt, and tell me it's his head... that was bold.
Liked the one midwife I got the first time I went in. After that I had a nurse practitioner each time (thinking I was going to be able to discuss birth plans with a midwife each time). Not the case at all. Nurse practitioner gave me so much mixed information not sure how comfortable I feel coming back. I would like clarity and to be actually heard out with my body and what I feel is right. But being in a prenatal care that tells gives you mixed feelings and question.. I just don't know how to get back in to an appointment, kinda nervous to call and have that talk. Was also told day one that all midwives birth the patients at Saint thomas midtown but feeling like the one nurse practitioner I was getting each appointment not being fully educated confused me so much. I was told I'd have to pay saint thomas midtown if I wanted to birth there at all. I'm left so confused, and feeling more home birth. Not sure what to do.. was told without a doubt if I'm in active labor getting there I'd get the tub to labor in. Then told I have to take a class I have to pay for in the hospital and it's not connected to the midwifes?? Before I go back I'm gonna need some clearing up, and some professionally trained staffed at that facility.. no prenatal care place needs this much confusion with there staff. Absolutely appreciate the food boxes and diapers for my daughter's and would benefit from thos going back, just can't stand getting suck in accurate information and leaving an appointment questioning and so much more confused then when I went in for answers.
1 star – and that’s being generous The front desk service was absolutely unacceptable. I called and scheduled an appointment over the phone, but received no confirmation at all. Since the appointment was in the afternoon, I went to the clinic in the morning to double-check—only to be told there was no record of my booking. Later that same afternoon, I got a text message saying I had missed my appointment and was asked to reschedule for the next day. I returned to the clinic to sort it out, and only then did they admit that the front desk had made a mistake and caused me to miss my appointment. To make matters worse, the new appointment wasn’t even for the next day—it was two weeks later. Their careless handling cost me an entire month of delay. A simple apology doesn’t cut it. I’ve given 1 star, but honestly, they don’t even deserve that.
I have had two visits here in which I needed an ultrasound and labs. It took extremely long to receive my results both times. I waited nearly a month for my ultrasound results, and well over a month for my lab results the next time. I called multiple times both times, and that adds to the frustration I have felt throughout this experience.
My first visit here was amazing the woman who checked me in was very warm in her communication and prompt with getting me back. I will say I sat for some time before they asked me openly to provide a urine sample. The Midwife Kate Thomas was respectful of my birth plan wishes and took her time asking all the initial questions. I left feeling very hopeful about my care team including Rachel the behavioral therapist who stopped by after my last visit. The second visit was nothing like the first I checked in about 10 minutes early and waited 30 minutes after my appointment before I was seen. I spoke to a woman who looked of American American decent with a small build, and flattened shoulder-length hair (description added as I do not know her name and hope this is addressed to her for office improvement) at the front desk who was very rude and short in her communication my husband and I could hear her speaking to her coworkers this same way and making inappropriate jokes about patients. Haliey C., the nurse practitioner who came in to see me had a look of confusion and while introducing herself I vocalized this. I got the idea she did not take time to look over my chart before coming in the room due to her lack of awareness about the placement of the baby, my size, and her response "I'll look over those records". I didn't feel comfortable or think it necessary to ask her any questions so our visit was very brief. I was able to get set up with a lactation specialist for the next appointment as well as the equipment they missed in my previous appointment. Speaking from personal experience of managing a health care office for 7 years with high volumes of patients. I believe they can improve their services by starting with the front desk, a nurse who greeted me said hello as soon as I walked in the front desk staff only acknowledged me to check in the sheet and at checkout. The way you greet your patients and communicate with them is everything. Your front desk being the first line of connection has a great impact on the office as a whole. Providers being overbooked to where they don't have time or take the time to read the chart before the visit is an issue in and of itself, what is there to follow up on if they have no awareness of where I am in my health prior to the meeting? The best part about this last appointment was the gal who explained the glucose monitor to me she was very patient and took her time as I grew the courage to do it myself. I am hoping to see improvements in future interactions with the staff. I want this to be a place where I can refer other military wives and moms looking for a holistic approach.
