Go anywhere else if you can afford it. (I go here for psychiatry, not rehab) They have a new dr every year and you have to start over each time, re-explaining your trauma and reasons to be there, as if the previous dr left no information. The dr they currently have is very condescending and doesn’t seem interested in doing his job well, but why would he when he’ll be sent somewhere else in a few months. Some of the receptionists are kind, but others act like they wish you were dead. They say they’ll call you when your scrips are sent out but they won’t. This office is only for people who don’t have the money or privilege to go somewhere they actually care about you. If you want to see the worst of American healthcare, you found the spot.
I had some good times at this place. It’s definitely not one of the most generous, well-stocked, amenity-laden or pedagogical facilities out there but most of the staff are amazing and *really* care about the clients. They allowed me to set up my guitar, amp, PA, etc. in one of their meeting rooms and play/sing songs for them after the morning meetings. They were pretty reasonable letting me work as many hours as I wanted (within reason) even allowing me to stay out past midnight on several occasions. They DID make me stop going to Planet Fitness after work because I got “pulled over” on my bicycle in Metairie and my backpack searched and I had to call them and let them know I was gonna be late which drew attention to it. The “long-term” facility on Tonti St is in a really old, house-like building that used to be some kind of home for “colored” old folks (Google the history if you’re interested—it’s there). It’s actually 5+ buildings taking up nearly half a block where the oldest part is the main building with most of the offices. There’s a mysterious 4th floor that is supposed to be inaccessible to clients used for storage but also a secret hideout.
Odyssey House of New Orleans & Bayou Vista SAVED MY LIFE...MORE THAN ONCE...REHAB is NOT A VACATION..the staff members are NOT our CONNOISSEURS.."like at hotel... Although I would like to add that New Orleans was like being at a 5 star hotel...the building ETC ..but they might be a little understaffed...the TECH's definitely do not have more than 2 hands & 2 feet & should be paid more.Bayou Vista..was like being at a Nice Motel ..but again they really do need more staff members or TECH's ON THE DAY SHIFTS & they should get paid more NO MATTER what their backgrounds are .. especially if they've been there for a while and provide loyalty.... PLEASE let's keep every suffering addict & their families in our PRAYERS & if they don't have a FAMILY..then ODYSSEY HOUSE will treat you like FAMILY... ALSO remember their TECHNOLOGY is IMPECCABLE so always tell the truth.May GOD BLESS you and GOD BLESS AMERICA 🙏
I visited this facility on yesterday because I wanted to drop off some money to a former client . A staff member answered and ask me to give her a min as she walked away. Another woman came to the door and rudely approached me. She begin by saying there can’t be no outside visitors. Her face gestured was unexceptionable and she was very rude. I expressed how I was displeased with her approach. She went on saying she a nurse; but she was no good communicator. I left the facility because I have to obey the rules but in return I would like if they treat all with respect. The community need resources but even the most vulnerable folks deserves to be treated with kindness.
The staff were amazing. Detox they took very good care Of me. No one knew my bad behavior, caused by seizures. 5 different types. Walking talking worst. I'm mean violent, after seizures. They dealt with me, kindly, I wasn't nice at all. I still have doctors they set me up with. 5/6 years ago, I was there. Before you judge staff, look at yourself. Detox, is hard. They still deal with you and your bad behavior. You are no Saint, if your in Odd. House. I'm alive because those men, and women. Ellen Trauth
