I unfortunately have been forced to find a new PCD because I have grown tired of being constantly belittled and harassed by the front office at the Damien center particularly over insurance I do not have (which they are aware of) and medical bills that they are FULLY aware I cannot pay for right now as they told me themselves at the start of seeking care there that they “wouldn’t pressure me” to make payment and have in fact done nothing but that. The staff know that I am disabled, unemployed and cannot travel without assistance yet continue to send me letters and call me to belittle me and harass me for insurance info and money I do not have. They have cancelled every single one of my appointments I have tried to make since then so I am incredibly upset and frustrated that I can’t even seek the care I need or access my medication. This along with the blatant misgendering/deadnaming and snide comments the reception staff have made to me in person, have all resulted in me losing faith in a place I once felt safe to seek help at. It’s both disheartening and disappointing that a center that prides itself on being exclusive to everyone especially the most vulnerable of us, has gone so downhill to the point where patients are forced to find a new pcd because they are refused care for having no insurance and don’t want to deal with the unprofessional behavior of certain staff members both at the center and over the phone. I have grown to dread having to call to have my prescription sent to the pharmacy or to book an appointment because 90% of the time, I end up leaving the phone call greatly upset due to the downright nasty way the staff on the other end have spoken to me and I simply won’t tolerate it anymore. It’s even more disappointing that despite putting in a formal complaint about the manner that I was treated, nothing was done to hold the staff members involved accountable and I strongly feel that my identity was shared with them as I have been faced with clear retaliation since then in the form of increased rudeness towards me. There are some amazing staff members at the Damien center who dedicate their lives to helping others and bringing positivity to our community. But there are also some who clearly take pleasure in belittling vulnerable members of our community and are ruining the once shining reputation the center had as a safe, welcoming place for our community. I am not the only one who has had a bad experience there either. Several of my friends in the community have had similar experiences if not worse, but those are not my stories to tell. You can check out the rest of these google reviews to read some of them for yourself if you are interested. But I will not be supporting the Damien center anymore unless they make major changes to their staffing and actually uphold their own policies like they claim to because no one should be made to feel this way when trying to seek medical care especially an already vulnerable community of people.

I attempted to establish care here and access prep medications. But the staff clearly does not care. I had an appointment at 8:40. There is a lot of construction around Indy, and since I hadn't been there before, I got lost on the grounds. Arrived at the clinic at 8:45 and was told I needed to reschedule due to a 5-minute grace period. That is something that you need to share prior to the appointment. I felt like the staff could've been understanding considering I missed that by a minute. I found whoever was working the front desk at clinics to be dismissive and callous.

I’ll start by saying that, historically, I don’t really write reviews. So, unless you’re just walking in for testing, I can tell you that it is best to avoid this place and down below I will tell you why. What used to be a pillar of an underserved community, prior to 2024, is now just a mere shell of its former self. Generally, the staff is either rude, apathetic, or both. To be clear, the staff I’m referring to throughout are the non-medical staff - the front desk clinic. I’ve witnessed the staff randomly yell at patients and give incorrect information. Myself and others also witnessed staff calling out detailed, private health information of other patients in front of us all! This is completely unprofessional and I believe unlawful! Aren’t there HIPAA laws?? I really should not know the HIV status of other patients bc of a staff members lack of professionalism and/or competence. Lastly, the staff never answers the phone! I was on hold for 30+ minutes trying to reach someone and never got through. During the ENTIRE 30 minute hold, the AI-voice informed me that I was #1 in the queue. When I arrived to the facility, most of the staff was just talking and hanging out by one desk and the others were at their desks helping no one. I felt unimportant, as I had been trying to reach someone for my entire 30 minute drive there, and they were just goofing around and laughing. Does the staff do any work? Damien Center has a policy that if you’re late for an appointment by more than 5 minutes, they reschedule. I had an appointment at 4:20 that I arrived to at 4:26 due to traffic and road closures in that area. They turned me away knowing that this appointment had to be completed by the next day or my health will be negatively impacted! There were no other patients in the building lobby at that time and I was turned away for being a minute past their stupid policy. This place wants to present itself as a boon to the community, but in reality, they are all talk and no show. Especially when it comes to preventative treatment for the ailments that are most detrimental to the LGBTQ+ community. I am utterly mortified by my experiences here from 2024 onward and wish I could put 0 stars. I don’t even have a history of writing reviews, but my experience was so PROFOUNDLY NEGATIVE that I was moved to do so. If I can save even ONE other person the humiliation, inconvenience, and frustration that I had to endure while dealing with The Damien Center, then writing this was totally worth the time spent.
