Came here with my son because of the benefits shut down. Friendly welcoming staff helped us to their food Bank this past Halloween 🎃. A few donors showed up which was really nice. A little partying 🤗Hot dogs and chips with Waters were given. there food pantry gave us a decent bag of food 🛍️. However I would like to highlight the fact that there were a few participants/ clients that were being very greedy and rude bombarding the free Extra Items table. Anytime another client would leave an item they could not use there were two individuals that would immediately run and grab it off the table regardless of how many they've already taken. I think there should be a sign in Sheet, so if you take a protein item you should not be allowed to take another until everyone has gotten at least an extra item of protein. People should not be greedy in these times due to the fact that everybody is in the same predicament more or less needing extra food and help. It's hard to ask for help when people are greedy and they do not make you feel welcomed. Maybe with a sign in sheet it would get better that way nobody would feels like they are being left out and everybody would get an extra item. After all every item does have an expiration date 📅 and it is always nice to see items go to a place where they are needed and appreciated rather than hoarded.
You will find that if you have a problem with staff it never goes away. You may not interact with that person for years and then comes the day you have to interact & you might as well have been on hold with that person's attitude. Yes there are many people that are helpful but there are those that the situation never improves. Be ready.
Although APLA has excellent health services APLA housing services hasn't done absolutely nothing for the past year resulting in me losing my voucher extension last November and after filing a grievance which was not prioritized nor the proper grievance procedures the only outcome was to have my case switched to a different location because the housing worker is afraid cause she knows she did'nt do anything now I'm getting the same results denial of housing services I plan to take legal action for housing services they didn't provide and falsifying documents here's an update on APLA poor housing services as of Friday April 11 2025 after my many attempts to rectify the housing situations with apla director Craig Thomas failed to return my phone calls or emails clearly shows that APLA has no empathy concerning the homeless here in the city of Los Angeles HOPWA and all other funding agencies should do a thorough investigation removing this organization from all housing services as their employees are persuaded to participate in harmful tactics that stands against what this organization founders Nancy, Matt, Ervin, and Max stood for they absolutely wouldn't stand for what APLA is doing against people today who are survivors of the early years stigma that was against us living homeless with HIV isn't easy I miss doctor's appointments, I'm not taking medication properly and I'm not getting proper rest all due to not knowing where I'm going to sleep from day to day this organization was supposedly be are safe haven where we can get help and support but I've been dragged around treated as if my life is irrelevant as I watch so many people dying in the streets from homelessness , low self-esteem, no motivation and drugs.
This place has been so unhelpful to me. Unhelpful to me in both finding housing and doing what healthcare/outreach programs are supposed to do. I need say anything more they know what they're doing wrong.
APLA is completely disfuncional. All the different departments and services offered are disconnected from each other. If you want dental services get ready to fill out dozens of papers , then the pantry the same papers, then medical the same papers . The Kingsley place has this security guard who is very unfriendly to the gay community , he is rude, he does not know how to talk to people e immediately sends you away without helping you at all. This security guard needs to learn some manners and he needs a training about LGBT it is ironic that he works in a place that offers services to LGBT but he is an ignorant working there. Avoid this guy and place , you can and call before going .
